Sashiko - the Art of Slow Stitching... and why we are obsessed!

First things first…

It’s pronounced: SAH-shee-koh (not sash-ee-ko, not sash-iko… we’ve all been there)

Now that we’ve cleared that up - let’s talk about why this beautiful, rhythmic stitching style has quietly stolen the hearts of makers everywhere,

Sashiko or "little stabs" originates from Japan and dates back centuries - born not out of decoration, but necessity. In rural Japan, fabric was precious. People couldn’t afford to waste anything, so they began reinforcing worn garments by stitching layers together using a simple running stitch. Over time, these practical repairs became something more: Patterns emerged, repetition became meditative and function turned into beauty.

What started as mending evolved into a recognisable textile art form - one that still carries its original spirit of care, resourcefulness and intention.

Why we love it... and you might too

Sashiko is slow.
Repetitive.
Almost hypnotic.

And in a world that moves fast… that’s exactly the point. It’s not about perfection. It’s about rhythm. It’s about sitting down, picking up a needle, and letting your hands do the thinking.

You don’t need complicated tools. You don’t need a plan. You just need a thread, some fabric, and a little time.

What you need to get started:

At Fabric Cartel, we’ve got everything you need to dive in:

Sashiko thread - thicker, stronger, made to stand out
Sashiko needles - longer for smooth, continuous stitching
Pre-printed panels - for easy, guided designs

(And yes… once you start, you will want more than one project going at once.)

It’s not just stitching... it's storytelling

What we love most about Sashiko is that it holds onto its roots.

It’s still about:

  • Repairing
  • Reusing
  • Slowing down
  • Creating something meaningful

Whether you’re mending a piece, adding texture to a quilt, or just stitching for the joy of it - every line you sew becomes part of a story.

Come in, have a look, and let us show you how to get started.

I would like to be part of the Sashiko group Virginia but couldn’t commit until halfway through, so may come in and see you and look at the Sashiko panels I like the lighter fabric.
I would like to learn more.
